The successful candidate will work in a creative, dynamic, technology and innovation group with a focus on evaluating materials properties. The person will work in the laboratory environment and be responsible for sample preparation, sample characterization, and instrument and laboratory upkeep. Experience with cross-sectioning methods, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and vibrational spectroscopy is desired.

Responsibilities:
  • Execute lab work with input and direction from senior staff
  • Prepare samples for characterization, including polished, epoxy-potted cross-sections of mixed metal, glass/ ceramic, and polymeric samples
  • Conduct analysis and characterization of samples using optical microscopy, electron microscopy, FTIR, and other surface analysis methods
  • Optimize methods for sample preparation, sample characterization, and lab operations
  • Document results in a thorough, concise, and consistent manner
  • Summarize and communicate findings

Required skills, experience, and education:
  • Cross-section preparation: epoxy potting, sectioning, grinding, and polishing
  • Experience in operating and interpreting results with at least two of the following techniques: optical microscope, SEM, EDS, FTIR
  • Ability to work in a team environment – to be open to guidance, to complete tasks independently, and to ask questions as needed to avoid confusion, rework, and delays
  • BS in Materials Science or Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or other science, with demonstrated skills

Preferred skills and experience:
  • Experience with ion mill, FIB, cryo-microtome
  • Experience analyzing metal, ceramic, glass, and polymeric samples
  • Experience with advanced microscopy & surface analysis techniques like profilometry, scanning probe microscopy, XRD, XRF, Raman, ellipsometry, XPS, TOF-SIMS
  • Detail oriented - able to make thorough observations
  • Critical thinking skills to be able to adapt and improve procedures when necessary
  • Ability to thrive in a rapidly changing environment and independently troubleshoot technical problems
  • Able to summarize results in Powerpoint or similar format for wider communication
  • Strong communication (written and oral), organizational, and time management skills

Physical requirements:

Candidate will be required to work in a lab. Must be able to work with hands, sit/stand/walk 4-6 hours per day. Work at microscope 2-4 hours per day.
