Job Description
May administer medication orally, sublingually, or topically, or by providing a single dose to a patient for immediate self-administration as directed by physician/practitioner.
b. May administer medication via intramuscular, subcutaneous or intradermal injections per physician/practitioner orders.
i. For all immunizations/vaccines, a Vaccine Information Sheet and consent form shall be provided to employee.
ii. For all Tuberculin Skin Testing, a Tuberculosis screening questionnaire shall be provided and reviewed by physician/practitioner/RN prior to administration.
c. Prior to administration of medication by the medical assistant, a licensed
physician or registered nurse/practitioner by law to do so shall verify the correct medication and dosage.
d. No anesthetic agent may be administered by a medical assistant.
8. Assist patients with ambulation and transfers.
9. Prepare patients for and assist the physician, practitioner or registered nurse in examinations or procedures including positioning, draping, shaving and disinfecting treatment sites.
10. As authorized by the supervising physician/practitioner, provide patient information and instruction.
14. Administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency situation.
Medical Assistant/Licensed Vocational Nurse
Certified or licensed trained medical professional who performs both administrative and clinical duties in an occupational health clinic.
Scope of Practice:
Prior to performing technical supportive services, a medical assistant/Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) shall receive training, as necessary, in the judgment of the supervising physician or practitioner to assure the medical assistant/LVN competence in performing that service at the appropriate standard of care. Such training shall be administered in either of the following settings: Under a licensed physician, or under a nurse practitioner/physician assistant, registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse, a physician assistant or a qualified medical assistant ( taken from the Medical Board of California website).
A. The MA/LVN may perform administrative duties as the following:
1. Database and outbreak management for COVID testing program.
2. Greeting employees and inputting encounter per Front Desk Encounter Procedure.
3. Answering phones in professional manner and re-direct calls if applicable.
4. Schedule/Re-scheduling appointments using Microsoft Outlook
5. Filing of medical documents in appropriate panels of medical record.
6. Input training completion in training management system.
7. Maintain inventory of medical/office supplies (ordering, re-stocking)
8. Must be proficient with Word, Excel and comfortable with computer applications.
9. Other administrative assistant tasks involved in operation of medical clinic.
B. Medical Assistant/LVN may perform technical supportive services such as those specified
below provided that all of the following conditions are met.
1. The supervising physician/nurse authorized the medical assistant to perform the service and assumes responsibility for the patient' s treatment and care.
2 The medical assistant has completed training below and has demonstrated competence in the performance of the service, as ascertained by the supervising physician/practitioner.
3 Each technical supportive service performed by the medical assistant is documented in the patient' s medical record, indicating the name, date and time, a description of the service performed, and the name of the physician/practitioner who gave the medical assistant patient-specific authorization to perform the task or who authorized the task under a patient-specific standing order.
C. The MA/LVN may perform technical supportive services such as the following:
1. Collect and record patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse,
respiration rate and blood pressure, and basic information about the presenting and previous conditions.
2. Perform automated visual testing not requiring interpretation in order to obtain
test results.
3. Perform onsite COVID testing per testing protocol
4. Perform Venipuncture
a. Collect blood specimens in appropriate tubes dependant on lab test ordered by
practitioner/physician.
b. Select appropriate test(s) on Lab Order Slip per physician/practitioner order(s).
c. Place specimen in appropriate collection bag with order slip and request pick-up from Diagnostics Laboratory.
5. Collect specimens for lab testing by utilizing non-invasive techniques, including urine, sputum, and stool.
a. If dipstick urinanalysis ordered, collect and record data for interpretation by
practitioner/physician
4. Perform electrocardiogram.
5. Apply and remove bandages, dressings and splints.
6. Remove sutures or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations.
