General Summary

The Pharmacology Research Scientist will design, execute, and interpret in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro assays in primary cells to study the action of compounds on disease-relevant biology. They can complete work efficiently and independently, and design alternative approaches to achieve desired outcomes. They keep up to date on the scientific literature relevant to their field(s) of technical expertise. This level captures both the Research organization’s entry level for staff with a research doctoral degree (PhD) and the advanced experimental expert leading one or more critical laboratory functions with high impact on drug discovery projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

· Plans and executes elaborate pharmacology experiments in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro in primary cells

· Collates and interprets complex data and synthesizes results to guide Project decisions and new research activities

· Exercises solid judgment to prioritize studies, considering feasibility and Project impact

· Performs advanced experimental troubleshooting

· Scours relevant scientific literature and routinely incorporates new insights into research activities

· Identifies, prioritizes and introduces relevant emerging technologies in his/her field of expertise to advance internal technology platforms and to create/maintain a competitive advantage

· Explores the feasibility of applying new scientific concepts or implements and validates novel experimental approaches and technologies to achieve project goals

· Independently prepares study presentations and presents experimental conclusions at internal Group/Department or Project Team research meetings

· Contributes to patent and/or publication preparation

· Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education Level

· PhD

Required Experience

· PhD and 0-3y experience

Required Knowledge/Skills

· Hands-on experience with mouse handing, dosing, & tissue collection (preferred)

· Hands-on experience with cryosectioning, autoradiography, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization experience (preferred)

· Fundamental understanding of the physiology of lung, kidney, liver, and/or peripheral nervous system, as well as principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacology

· Experience with primary tissue in vitro and ex vivo preparations (whole organ or precision cut organ slices), including dissection, culture, pharmacokinetic and functional assessment

• Experience designing & executing complex, challenging assays that measure the action of compounds on in vitro or in vivo disease biology

• A broad working knowledge of fundamental pharmacology principles

• Astute understanding of his/her own discipline and the relevant literature

• Maintains high level of knowledge of current developments in the scientific Project field

• Displays proven productivity and experimental creativity, and effective dissemination of ideas

• Demonstrates effective communication skills, especially in peer-directed presentations

• Demonstrates awareness of other Project-related disciplines and an understanding of general concepts and some experimental detail within those areas

Target pay: 50-60/hr depending on education
