Job Description

Protein Engineering Scientist

About the role:

As a Protein Engineering Scientist, you will work with the Director of Protein and RNA Engineering to advance our gene editing technologies, enabling the discovery of new therapeutics, and improving their function so they can be safely and effectively delivered to patients. Working with a team comprised of data scientists, molecular biologists, and translational biologists, you will perform creative and innovative protein engineering campaigns through structure-function based designs, synthetic logic systems, and large pooled NGS screening approaches.

Primary responsibilities:
  • Design and build proteins and RNAs to enable therapeutic genome and transcriptome engineering using CRISPRCas and novel systems
  • Lead efforts to optimize activity and specificity of DNA and RNA modification systems using in vivo delivery paradigms and clinically relevant models
  • Lead design and execution of directed evolution screens
  • Follow the literature to continually identify and implement new approaches to engineering efforts
  • Provide mentorship to others by challenging ideas and interpretations, leading discussions of new ideas or approaches, and recruiting others to help solve experimental roadblocks

What we’re looking for:
  • A PhD in a biological discipline, or a masters with a minimum of four years of experience in independent experimental design, focused on bioengineering, protein biochemistry, directed evolution, computational protein design, or structural biology. More experience is welcome, and the position will be leveled accordingly
  • A creative thinker with a track record of modifying protein behavior through direct modifications or through screening and selection approaches
  • Well versed in molecular biology techniques for building or synthesizing constructs and libraries

What characterizes a top candidate:
  • Demonstrated track record of characterizing, developing or optimizing genome or transcriptome modification systems (e.g. CRISPRCas, Zinc-fingers, Meganucleases, TALEs)
  • Experience engineering proteinDNA and/or protein-RNA interactions for improved activity
  • Strong understanding of protein structure and function used to design libraries and screens based on sequencing, flow cytometry or selection
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams to achieve experimental objectives
Salary Range: 135k-160k based on experience
