DESCRIPTION:

The Lab Technician will support lab management.

Preferred experiences:
  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, molecular biology, cell biology or related field
  • Working knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis with demonstrated ability to follow established protocols and make basic observations/conclusions.
  • Basic cell culturing experience, specifically the ability to follow established protocols for the culturing and passage of immortalized cell lines
  • Worked in the laboratory environment for 1 to 3 years
  • Excellent communication, organizational and collaboration skills
  • Using computers and software to carry out lab management tasks

Scope of duty

Clean and maintain the lab environment, freezer/nitrogen tank upkeep, chemical storage and disposal. [Detailed descriptions for hiring process]
  • Keeping all common areas clean, organized, and free of dust
  • Adhere to a prescribed schedule to maintain tissue culture rooms, including cleaning tissue culture hoods, incubators, and general lab housekeeping
  • Handle biohazard and chemical waste according to OSHA standards
  • Replace LN2 CO2 and other gasses as required
  • Monitor and defrost freezers, including temperature monitoring, issue logs, maintenance, organize freezer space
  • Report lab and inventory issues to supervisor or appropriate group

Support maintaining compliance control, including EHS requirement. [Detailed descriptions for hiring process]
  • Support and conduct regular EHS assessment
  • Support routine molecular biology assays as part of general lab pathogen monitoring and tissue culture equipment maintenance, following established procedures and protocols for sample processing, PCR, and agarose gel analysis.
  • Support and conduct cell line management, including keeping cell line inventory record and stocking cells.

Support purchasing consumable supplies and reagents. [Detailed descriptions for hiring process]
  • Monitor inventory of lab reagents and supplies; submit requests as appropriate

Stock management, glassware maintenance, autoclaving [Detailed descriptions for hiring process]
  • Receive and check-in incoming lab material shipments; distribute the materials to the requesters as needed and/or store in onsite inventory
  • Prepare, restock, and/or maintain a variety of lab supplies, including pipette, tips, media/buffers, and stock solutions
  • Wash accumulated glassware as needed, tidy sink areas, replenish hand washing supplies.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Keeping all common areas clean, organized, and free of dust
  • Adhere to a prescribed schedule to maintain tissue culture rooms, including cleaning tissue culture hoods, incubators, and general lab housekeeping
  • Handle biohazard and chemical waste according to OSHA standards
  • Replace LN2 CO2 and other gasses as required
  • Monitor and defrost freezers, including temperature monitoring, issue logs, maintenance, organize freezer space
  • Report lab and inventory issues to supervisor or appropriate group
  • Support and conduct regular Enviromental Health Safety assessment
  • Perform molecular biology techniques for mycoplasma management, including DNA extraction and PCR test
  • Monitor inventory of lab reagents and supplies; submit requests as appropriate
  • Receive and check-in incoming lab material shipments; distribute the materials to the requesters as needed and/or store in onsite inventory
  • Prepare, restock, and/or maintain a variety of lab supplies, including pipette, tips, media/buffers, and stock solutions
  • Wash accumulated glassware as needed, tidy sink areas, replenish hand washing supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or special projects as needed.

REFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, molecular biology, or related field
  • Working knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis with demonstrated ability to follow established protocols and make basic observations/conclusions.
