Pay Rate Range: $36-46/hr

The Pathobiology Group is seeking a highly skilled Research Associate III (RA III) who is excited to join our team. Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the RA III will work collaboratively with the IHC Core Group and other cross-functional teams to prepare, cut, perform basic staining, and operate a variety of different digital glass slide imagers . This is an on-site, lab role, thus candidates are required to be onsite in Foster City, CA.

Primary duties include:
  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by scientists and pathologist(s), in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Perform sample preparation including tissue sectioning, tissue staining, coverslipping, and scanning
  • Independently operate a variety of brightfield slide scanners and automated lab equipment
  • Sample intake and accessioning into multiple systems according to group procedures
  • Accurately maintain chain of custody when handling clinical and GLP samples in the in-house LIMS system
  • Prepare bulk solutions and reagents for IHC procedures
  • Thoroughly QC image quality and optimize scanning parameters
  • Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, cutting, staining, and scanning of tissue specimens
  • Perform routine daily and weekly maintenance of select pathology equipment and ancillaries
  • Assist in executing and validating new procedures
  • Identify problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolve or immediately report to supervisor
  • Meticulous record keeping and follow-up with Vendors and External Partners
  • Ability to independently problem solve and troubleshoot under supervision of manager
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area

Required Work Experience
  • BS degree in life science or science-related field
  • Proficient tissue sectioning experience is a must with at least 2+ years of experience in histology
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification is a plus, but not required
  • Immunohistochemistry experience preferred but not required
  • Demonstrate consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity
  • Experience operating automated equipment (microtomes, autostainers, digital imagers, etc.)
  • Experience using an LIS system is a plus but not required
  • Proficient in using Microsoft tools; Advanced Excel skills is a plus
  • Demonstrate strong time-management skills
  • Works will in a team-oriented environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills

Physical Requirements
  • The performance of duties may require frequent lifting and carrying objects of up to 50 pounds
  • May be required to use a wide variety of manual tools and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity
