Department/Team Overview
Seeking a motivated and curious student to join the in vitro Assays Development team as a summer intern.  The intern will work actively with the team in a hands-on environment to learn basic lab techniques, troubleshooting, and complete a hypothesis-driven project.  The intern will have the opportunity to give presentations at various levels of the company, preparing them for a successful career in the biotechnology industry.

Intern Position Summary
Seeking a student intern interested in a unique opportunity to support the in vitro Assays Development team by optimizing cell culture, nucleic acid extraction, and RE-PCR workflows. This internship provides the opportunity to learn and work directly with a progressive Gene Therapy organization.



Intern Job Responsibilities/Deliverables
  • Under direction, the intern will learn basic techniques including mammalian cell culture, nucleic acid extraction, and various PCR assays
  • Intern will work with the vector biosciences team to further optimize the use of automated nucleic acid extraction for PCR assays using various techniques
  • The intern will carry out an independent hypothesis-driven research project to answer interesting scientific questions at the molecular level
  • Project will provide the opportunity to experience first-hand research study from start to finish, including design, development, and optimization
  • Internship will provide exposure to day-to-day laboratory tasks and the opportunity to join Research Project Team meetings and Vector Biosciences team meeting, providing focus on discussing the scientific progress of preclinical programs projects.

Intern Qualifications and Skills
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in life sciences
  • Must have an interest in pursuing a career in Life Sciences/Biotech/Pharmaceuticals
  • Ability to manage workload effectively including planning, organizing, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
  • Committed to a 10-week full-time, summer internship program on site in South San Francisco

Intern will have unique experience to work hands-on with scientists in the gene therapy field.  Along with training the intern will have the opportunity to receive mentoring from experienced scientists.  They will learn multiple techniques in cell culture, nucleic acid extraction and PCR assays in the lab.  They will also be given opportunities to present cross functionally at team meetings and encouraged to share their own ideas.
