Job Description
Head of Agentic AI & Intelligent Automation (Biopharma)
Location: United States (Hybrid/Remote options available) East Coast
Level: Executive / Senior Leadership
Overview
A leading, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical organization is seeking a forward-thinking Head of Agentic AI & Intelligent Automation to define and scale the next generation of enterprise automation.
This role will lead the design and deployment of agentic workflows–AI-enabled, autonomous and semi-autonomous systems that operate on a plan-act-reflect cycle–enhancing decision-making and driving productivity across the organization. The position will partner across R&D, Commercial, Medical Affairs, and corporate functions to unlock the full potential of generative AI and intelligent automation within a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Define and execute a multi-year roadmap integrating agentic AI, RPA, hyperautomation, and process mining
- Establish and scale an Automation Center of Excellence (CoE), including governance, reusable assets, and ROI tracking
- Partner with executive stakeholders to prioritize high-impact automation initiatives across clinical, commercial, safety, and manufacturing domains
- Champion modern agent orchestration frameworks and integration patterns
Technology & Architecture
- Architect modular, multi-agent systems leveraging LLMs and leading frameworks (e.g., LangChain ecosystem, AutoGen, CrewAI)
- Design secure agent ecosystems with shared memory, credential management, and role-based access controls
- Develop enterprise-grade human-agent collaboration frameworks (agent protocols, orchestration layers)
- Standardize integrations across vector databases and cloud AI/ML platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, Databricks, etc.)
Automation & Governance
- Build event-driven automation pipelines using modern low-code/no-code orchestration tools
- Implement monitoring, observability, and governance for agent-based systems
- Establish validation frameworks aligned with regulated environments (GxP, HIPAA, GDPR)
- Leverage process and task mining to continuously identify automation opportunities and measure impact
Product Execution & Delivery
- Lead cross-functional teams of AI engineers, automation architects, and product leaders
- Drive agile delivery through rapid prototyping, experimentation, and KPI-driven iteration
- Translate advanced AI capabilities into scalable, enterprise-ready solutions
Innovation & Partnerships
- Evaluate and experiment with cutting-edge research in agentic AI and autonomous systems
- Collaborate with technology partners, cloud providers, and open-source communities
- Define and enforce standards around AI safety, ethics, and governance
- Partner closely with data, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams
Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in AI, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- 15+ years of experience leading AI/ML or intelligent automation initiatives
- 10+ years of hands-on development experience (Python, SQL, ML frameworks, etc.)
- Proven expertise in LLMs, RAG architectures, and deep learning systems
- Experience architecting large-scale AI platforms and deploying in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Strong background in MLOps, data platforms, and enterprise AI frameworks
- Experience operating in regulated industries (biopharma, healthcare, or similar)
- Track record of published research, thought leadership, or industry contributions preferred
