Engineering – Lab Technician III
Job Description
As a Mechanical Technician, you will play a key hands-on role in the development of medical products for image-guided surgery. Working closely with Mechanical Engineers, primarily in a laboratory environment, you will independently build, assemble, troubleshoot, test, evaluate, repair, and maintain complex mechanical and electromechanical systems, prototypes, machines, and test setups. This role supports mechanical product development from early prototype builds through verification, validation, and production readiness.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- Perform hands-on assembly, build, troubleshooting, and evaluation of complex mechanical and electromechanical systems.
- Work directly on large capital equipment, prototype hardware, machines, production-level hardware, and test setups.
- Support system bring-up, debugging, testing, validation, and verification activities in accordance with applicable Quality System requirements.
- Inspect mechanical parts and assemblies, interpret engineering drawings, and apply GD&T and tolerance principles during assembly and troubleshooting.
- Troubleshoot system-level mechanical and electromechanical issues and perform failure analysis to identify root causes and support corrective actions.
- Perform repair, preventive maintenance, refurbishment, and modification of existing machines and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Maintain accurate documentation of equipment configurations, issues, changes, repairs, maintenance activities, and test results.
- Create and update work instructions, bills of materials, qualification reports, ECO-related documentation, and FMEA inputs.
- Fabricate or modify simple parts, fixtures, and test setups as needed to support engineering development activities.
- Work independently while collaborating closely with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Service, Test, and other cross-functional teams.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Must Have
- * Ability to read mechanical drawings, understand tolerances, and perform mechanical inspections.
- * Ability to work directly on machines, prototypes, test setups, and production-level hardware.
- * Ability to work independently in a lab environment while partnering closely with Mechanical Engineers
- * Familiarity with the assembly, troubleshooting, and evaluation of motion and drive systems, including rotary and linear bearings, ball screws, chains, belts, gear reducers, servo motors, and stepper motors.
- High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 4 years of relevant hands-on technical experience.
- Proficiency with standard business computer applications, including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), email communication, electronic documentation, and working within corporate IT systems.
- * Strong hands-on experience assembling, troubleshooting, and evaluating complex mechanical and electromechanical systems.
Nice To Have
* Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Service, and other functions in a complex matrixed organization.
* Basic machine shop experience, including operation of manual machining equipment and fabrication of simple parts and fixtures.
* Experience supporting product development, prototype builds, verification testing, or production readiness.
* Experience with large capital equipment, motion systems, or electromechanical assemblies.
* Experience with X-Ray systems, medical devices, cable building, soldering, or PCBA repair.
* Familiarity with SolidWorks, Agile PLM.
* Familiar with Electromechanical and Motion Assembly of large capital equipment systems in a development environment.
