Job Description - Director, Assistant Controller

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director, Assistant Controller is a key finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity of the general ledger and accounts payable functions while driving strategic improvements across financial operations.
This role combines operational excellence with forward-looking leadership, overseeing compliance, automation initiatives, and team development.
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and enabling organizational growth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
These may include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversee and ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all general ledger postings and reconciliations.
  • Lead the month-end close process, delivering reliable financial reporting timely.
  • Drive optimization of general ledger and financial systems to enhance general ledger efficiencies.
  • Oversee accounts payable operations, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing and payments.
  • Champion accounts payable automation initiatives to reduce manual processing and improve cycle times.
  • Drive optimization of accounts payable process to enhance quality of documentation and streamline processes.
  • Maintain policies and procedures for accounts payable to ensure adherence to company guidelines and compliance with financial regulations.
  • Conduct periodic risk assessments of accounts payable and general ledger processes to identify vulnerabilities.
  • Proactively identify and implement control enhancements.
  • Build, mentor, and lead high-performing accounts payable and general ledger teams.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Encourage proactive problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Minimum of a Bachelors’ degree in an accredited accounting program with at least 15 years progressive accounting experience and 5+ years in leadership roles (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, internal controls, financial reporting and compliance.
  • Experience in public company environments; pharmaceutical/biotech/life sciences background preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with ERP systems (NetSuite, Great Plains, Epicor), AP tools (Concur) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated success in driving automation and process improvements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • CPA license and “Big Four” public accounting experience at manager level or above preferred.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  • Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, be at a desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer the telephone and type on a computer.
  • Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Pay Rate Range: $80-120/hr depending on experience
