Job Description
Role Summary
The organization is a global innovator in advanced diagnostic and health?technology solutions in oncology. The Head of Medical, Japan, serves as the senior medical leader responsible for shaping and executing the medical strategy across the organization’s portfolio in the Japanese market. This role ensures scientific excellence, regulatory alignment, and strong clinical credibility while driving cross?functional collaboration with commercial, regulatory, market access, and global medical teams. The leader will represent the organization to key opinion leaders, academic societies, regulators, and strategic partners.
This is a highly visible, strategic position requiring deep scientific expertise, strong leadership, and the ability to navigate a global biotech culture while operating effectively within Japan’s healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Strategy & Leadership

Develop and execute the Japan medical strategy aligned with global medical affairs and local business priorities.

Serve as the primary medical representative for Japan in global forums, ensuring local insights inform global strategy.

Lead medical planning for product launches, lifecycle management, and evidence?generation initiatives.
Scientific & Clinical Engagement

Build and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders, academic institutions, and clinical societies across relevant therapeutic areas.

Provide scientific leadership at conferences, advisory boards, and expert meetings.

Oversee development of scientific materials, publications, and medical education programs.
Evidence Generation & Data Strategy

Identify Japan?specific evidence needs and lead local clinical research initiatives in collaboration with global R&D.

Support investigator?initiated studies and real?world evidence programs.

Ensure scientific accuracy and integrity in all data dissemination.
Regulatory & Compliance Partnership

Partner with regulatory affairs to support submissions, responses to regulatory inquiries, and post?marketing commitments.

Ensure all medical activities comply with Japanese regulations, industry codes, and global standards.
Cross?Functional Collaboration

Work closely with commercial teams to ensure scientific alignment in field activities, messaging, and customer engagement.

Partner with market access teams to support health economic models, reimbursement dossiers, and payer engagement.

Collaborate with global medical affairs to harmonize strategy, share insights, and drive consistency.
Team Leadership & Development

Build, lead, and mentor a high?performing Japan medical team, including field?based and office?based medical staff.

Foster a culture of scientific excellence, collaboration, and compliance.

Identify capability gaps and implement development plans to support organizational growth.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
-
Medical degree (MD or equivalent); PhD may be considered with strong relevant experience.

10+ years of experience in medical affairs within biotechnology, diagnostics, or pharmaceuticals.

Expertise in oncology, reproductive medicine, genetics, or related fields.

Proven leadership experience managing medical teams and cross?functional stakeholders.

Deep understanding of Japan’s healthcare system, regulatory environment, and medical culture.

Experience working with global organizations.

Native?level Japanese and strong English communication skills.
Preferred

Experience with molecular diagnostics, genomics, or non?invasive testing technologies.

Prior involvement in product launches in Japan.

Established relationships with key opinion leaders in relevant therapeutic areas.

Experience in evidence generation, including clinical trials or real?world data programs.
