Design Technician II

Pay 30-39/h depending on experience

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned. Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing and field service operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools, such as CAD, CAM, CATIA, ProEngineer, Solidworx or Siemens NX Software. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.
Position Summary
The Design Technician II – Electronics is a hands-on role responsible for supporting the design, development, testing, and validation of complex electromechanical systems. This individual will work closely with engineering teams to build, debug, and improve electronic assemblies, ensuring product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities
- Modify, repair, test, and troubleshoot electronic and electromechanical systems and PCBAs
- Support design teams in developing and improving products for manufacturing and field performance
- Build and debug systems involving:
- Embedded controllers (microprocessors, FPGAs)
- Power electronics and custom magnetics
- Analog circuits, sensors, and instrumentation
- Communication interfaces and touchscreen UI systems
- Perform lab testing using oscilloscopes, function generators, impedance analyzers, and related tools
- Execute validation, verification, and reliability testing; analyze results and document findings
- Develop and fabricate test setups and fixtures using shop tools (3D printers, drill press, mill, etc.)
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams
- Lead or support small technical projects, propose solutions, and drive resolution of issues
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum 4+ years of relevant electronics technician experience
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Electronic lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, signal generators, analyzers)
- Advanced soldering techniques (fine-pitch, QFN, BGA components)
- Experience with PCB design tools such as Cadence OrCAD and Allegro
- Working knowledge of LabVIEW and embedded system programming
- Experience in regulated industries such as medical devices, automotive, or aerospace
- Ability to interpret schematics, layouts, and engineering documentation
- Strong problem-solving skills with ability to work independently on non-routine tasks
- Effective teamwork and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical certification or associate degree in electronics or related field
- Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) and sustaining engineering
- Familiarity with PCBA manufacturing processes and failure analysis
- Exposure to design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for testability (DFT) principles
Working Conditions
- Primarily lab- and office-based environment
- Hands-on work with electronic systems, tools, and equipment
- May require extended periods of standing, testing, or working with hardware
